Stop Making Compensation Your Biggest Priority When Job Searching

How to Become a Top Performer: Stop Making Money Your Biggest Priority When Job Searching

Top earners have these 3 things in common:

1. Adaptability

2. Love taking on new challenges

3. Lifelong learners

Compensation is important but it’s not one of the things you should look at first. If you want to be a top performer you need work that makes you happy and challenges you to get you to perform at your best. “Earnings come along with performance, not the other way around.”

As you enter into your career, be open to experimenting with many different roles and challenges. See where your natural strengths can take you. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you can always specialize in a field later. But until you gain experience you won’t be able to truthfully say what you enjoy doing the most.

Don’t lock yourself into worrying only about how much money you can make.

As you start or change careers it’s important to ask yourself 2 questions:

1. What do you want to do?

2. Where do you want to do it?

Focus on balancing compensation with happiness-in-the-workplace. Compensation will always follow that if you are consistent and purposeful of how you’re developing your career!
